So around 6 months ago, my wife and I were sitting around the kitchen table musing on the great mystery of why some YouTube videos went viral, while others stayed small.
Ann’s cooking show www.youtube.com/howtocookthat had been soaring recently, with several of her videos getting over 2 million views (eg. Instagram Cake and Twitter Cake) and lots of love from influential sites such as Mashable and Huffington Post. We were pleased and still a little bewildered.
In the midst of this conversation, we started talking about whether there ever would be a ‘next big thing’ in baking and, if there even was such a thing, what on earth it would look like. At some point Ann stumbled onto augmented reality … and a little idea began to take flight.
What if we could take an ordinary cake … point an iphone or android at it … and suddenly the cake springs to life? What if fireworks burst out of the top of a girly princess castle? And what if you could take photos of the cake, the kids at the party and the fireworks.
We got excited, then as so often happens with nifty ideas, we started to investigate the cost and suddenly felt a bit flat. It was going to be expensive. But about this time, we met a young animation expert called Brendan Votano who listened to the idea and agreed to jump on board to help make it happen. From there on, Ann and Brendan started mapping out the technical side and, after months of discussing, animating, graphic designing and navigating red-tape, this week we released our first ever app – SURPRISE CAKES – on the Apple app store and Google Play.
It’s cool but it’s just the start … the little team is already working on a bunch of new themes that will be added to the Surprise Cakes app in the coming months. It’s been a big learning curve but the glowing feedback from happy customers makes it all worthwhile.
